In 1956, John McCarthy coined the term “artificial intelligence” and held the first academic conference on the subject at Dartmouth College in 1957.
In 1965, Joseph Weizenbaum created ELIZA, one of the earliest natural language processing programs. ELIZA could simulate conversation with a human by using pattern matching techniques and simple substitution methods to generate responses based on keywords in user input. This marked an important milestone in AI development as it showed how machines could be programmed to understand basic commands from humans.
The 1970s saw further advancements in AI technology with researchers developing expert systems capable of solving complex problems without relying on explicit programming instructions or data sets. These systems were able to draw conclusions from facts stored within their databases and make decisions accordingly – something no other computer system had done before them.
By 1980, robotics had become an integral part of artificial intelligence research as scientists sought ways to create robots that could interact with their environment autonomously rather than being controlled by humans directly or through pre-programmed instructions alone. The decade also saw advances in neural networks which allowed computers to learn from experience much like humans do – another major breakthrough for AI development at the time.
