Today is World Book Day, a day to celebrate the joy of reading and literature. To mark this special occasion, artificial intelligence (AI) has been used to reimagine some of the most famous houses from literature.
The AI project was created by online bookseller AbeBooks in collaboration with design agency BERG London. The team fed images of iconic literary homes into an AI algorithm which then generated new interpretations based on its own understanding of what these dwellings should look like.
The results are both fascinating and beautiful – each house is unique yet still recognisable as belonging to a particular story or character. For example, the home of Jane Eyre has been given a modern twist with bright colours and geometric shapes while Sherlock Holmes’ residence at 221B Baker Street has become more angular and industrial-looking than its original Victorian incarnation.
Other famous abodes that have been reinterpreted include those belonging to Winnie-the-Pooh, Alice in Wonderland, Harry Potter and even Dracula! Each one offers something different but all share certain features such as intricate details or unusual shapes which make them instantly recognisable as part of their respective stories.
This project demonstrates how technology can be used in creative ways to bring books alive for readers old and young alike. It also serves as a reminder that no matter how much technology advances over time, there will always be something magical about stepping inside the pages of our favourite stories through books – whether they are real or imagined!
