Older Generations Trail Nation On AI Know-How: Poll

As technology continues to evolve, so too does the need for individuals to stay up-to-date on the latest advancements. Artificial intelligence (AI) is no exception; a recent poll has revealed that older generations are lagging behind when it comes to AI know-how.
The survey was conducted by YouGov and commissioned by Microsoft, who polled 2,000 adults in the United States about their knowledge of AI. The results showed that those aged 18-34 were more likely than any other age group to be familiar with AI concepts such as machine learning and natural language processing. In contrast, only one third of respondents aged 55 or over said they had heard of these terms before taking part in the survey.
When asked if they felt confident using AI technologies such as voice assistants and facial recognition software, younger participants again demonstrated greater confidence than their older counterparts. While nearly half (48%) of 18-34 year olds expressed confidence in using these technologies, just 28% of those aged 55+ shared this sentiment.
Microsoft’s Chief Technology Officer Kevin Scott commented on the findings: “It’s encouraging to see young people embracing new technology like artificial intelligence but we must ensure everyone can benefit from its potential… We have an opportunity – and responsibility – to make sure everyone has access to digital skills training so they can take advantage of emerging tech trends like AI.”
The research also highlighted some interesting regional differences; respondents from New England were most likely (44%) to feel confident using AI technologies compared with those living in Mountain states (32%). Meanwhile Midwesterners reported being least knowledgeable about basic concepts related to artificial intelligence – only 27% said they had heard of machine learning prior to taking part in the survey compared with 44% nationally – yet still expressed higher levels of confidence when it came time use them at 36%.
These findings demonstrate how important it is for all generations – regardless of age or location – have access resources which will help them understand and utilize new technologies such as artificial intelligence effectively. With continued investment into education initiatives focused on developing digital literacy across all ages groups, hopefully soon we will see a nation where everyone feels comfortable engaging with cutting edge innovations like AI without fear or hesitation!
