Artificial intelligence (AI) has made a remarkable discovery that could help astronomers better understand the universe. Researchers from the University of California, Riverside have developed an AI-based algorithm to measure the mass of colossal clusters of galaxies in a way never before possible.
Galaxy clusters are some of the largest structures in our universe and contain hundreds or even thousands of individual galaxies bound together by gravity. Astronomers use these galaxy clusters to study how matter is distributed throughout space, as well as how it interacts with dark matter and dark energy. However, measuring their masses accurately has been difficult due to their immense size and complexity.
The new AI-based algorithm uses data from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory satellite to measure the masses of these massive galaxy clusters more precisely than ever before. The researchers used deep learning techniques—a type of machine learning—to develop an equation that can “weigh” these giant structures without having to rely on traditional methods such as gravitational lensing or X-ray observations alone.
The team trained its model using over 1,000 simulated galaxy cluster images generated by supercomputers at UC Riverside’s Center for Advanced Computing Research (CACR). This allowed them to create a mathematical formula that accurately predicts the mass distribution within each cluster based on its shape and structure alone – something no other method had been able to do previously.
In addition, this new technique also allows astronomers to estimate distances between different parts of a single cluster much more quickly than traditional methods would allow – something which could be invaluable when studying large numbers of distant objects in space simultaneously.
