Stack Overflow, the world’s largest online community for developers, is now taking a stand against tech giants who are using its platform to collect data without paying. The company recently announced that it will start charging artificial intelligence (AI) companies for access to training data from its users.
The move comes as AI technology continues to grow in popularity and importance across many industries. Companies like Google and Microsoft have been leveraging Stack Overflow’s vast network of developers to get their hands on valuable training data that can be used to improve their AI algorithms. Stack Overflow CEO Prashanth Chandrasekar said he believes it is time for these companies to pay up if they want access to his platform’s resources. “We believe our users should be compensated fairly when their work is being used by others,” he said in a statement announcing the new policy change. “We also believe there should be an equitable exchange between those providing training data and those consuming it.”
Under the new policy, any company wanting access to Stack Overflow’s user-generated content must first agree to pay a licensing fee based on usage metrics such as number of requests made or amount of data collected over a certain period of time. This fee will then go directly into a fund which will be distributed among all contributors whose work was used by the company requesting access.
Chandrasekar hopes this move will help create more fairness within the industry while also encouraging collaboration between different players in the space: “This model allows us all—developers, corporations, and Stack Overflow—to benefit from each other’s contributions while ensuring everyone gets paid fairly,” he said during an interview with Wired magazine about his decision.
In addition, Chandrasekar believes this could open up opportunities for smaller businesses looking to break into AI development but don’t have enough resources or capital yet: “By making sure everyone involved gets compensated appropriately we hope this encourages more startups and entrepreneurs working on innovative projects related to machine learning.”
