‘Can’t tie our own hands’: Presidential candidate warns an AI pause for US means ‘China running with it’

As the race for the White House heats up, one presidential candidate is warning that if America doesn’t take action on artificial intelligence (AI) soon, China will.
Former South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg recently spoke out about the need to invest in AI technology and research before it’s too late. He warned that if the United States fails to act now, then China could become a leader in this field of innovation.
Buttigieg said during an interview with Axios: “We can’t tie our own hands behind our back when it comes to something like artificial intelligence.” He added that “if we don’t get ahead of this curve, then somebody else is going to be running with it — and right now that looks like it’s going to be China.”
The former mayor also noted how important AI technology has become in recent years and how its use has grown exponentially across many industries including healthcare, transportation, finance and more. He believes investing in AI research would help create jobs here at home while also helping American businesses stay competitive globally.
Buttigieg isn’t alone in his call for increased investment into AI technologies either; other Democratic candidates such as Joe Biden have echoed similar sentiments as well. The former vice president has proposed a $300 billion plan over 10 years which he says would help fund new research initiatives related to robotics and automation technologies.
In addition to increasing funding for these types of projects, Buttigieg also wants Congress to pass legislation aimed at protecting Americans from potential privacy violations caused by companies using advanced data collection techniques or facial recognition software without their consent or knowledge. Such laws could potentially limit what type of information companies are allowed access too while still allowing them access enough data needed for their operations without infringing upon individual rights or freedoms.
Ultimately though Buttigieg believes America needs a comprehensive strategy when it comes to dealing with emerging technologies such as AI so they don’t fall behind other countries who may already be taking advantage of these advancements – namely China who he warns is currently leading the way forward on this front due largely because they lack any ethical considerations regarding its use unlike most Western nations do today..
