Chris Rock and Will Smith have been friends for a long time, but one moment between them has become legendary. During the 1998 Academy Awards ceremony, Smith playfully slapped Rock on the back of his head while they were both onstage. Now, thanks to artificial intelligence (AI), we can get an idea of what Chris Rock saw when he was hit by that slap.
A team from NVIDIA used AI to recreate what Chris Rock would have seen in that moment – and it’s pretty amazing. The team used generative adversarial networks (GANs) to create a 3D model of the scene as well as a realistic view from where Chris Rock was standing at the time. This allowed them to simulate how things would look from his perspective if he had turned around after being hit by Will Smith’s slap.
The results are quite impressive: you can see Will Smith’s face clearly in front of him with all its details intact, including his eyes and mouth movements during the slapping motion itself! It also shows us how much detail is captured in real-time video footage; even though this happened over 20 years ago, AI technology is still able to bring it back vividly today.
This project demonstrates just how powerful AI technology has become in recent years; not only can it be used for creating realistic simulations like this one but also for more practical applications such as facial recognition or medical diagnosis tools. As AI continues to evolve and improve over time, there will no doubt be many more exciting projects like this one coming out soon!
