A South Carolina priest has recently spoken out against the use of artificial intelligence (AI) by the Catholic Church in Asia. Father John Paul Walker, a pastor at St. Mary’s Parish in Charleston, believes that AI should not be used to create synodal documents for the church. He argues that this technology is too impersonal and does not reflect the values of Christianity or its teachings.
Father Walker believes that AI can never replace human interaction when it comes to creating meaningful documents for religious purposes. He says that “there is no place for AI in our faith” because it cannot understand or appreciate spiritual matters like humans can. He also worries about how this technology could be misused if it were adopted more widely within the church and beyond.
The Catholic Church in Asia has been using AI since 2019 to help create synodal documents which are used as guidelines for members of their faith community on issues such as marriage, family life, and social justice topics. The church claims that they have taken steps to ensure these documents remain faithful to traditional Christian beliefs while still taking advantage of modern technologies like AI-assisted writing tools and natural language processing algorithms which can help speed up document creation processes significantly compared with manual methods alone.
Father Walker acknowledges the potential benefits of using AI but he remains unconvinced about its application within his own faith community due to ethical concerns over privacy and data security as well as worries about how much control people will have over what gets written into these important religious texts going forward if machines are involved in their production process instead of humans alone being responsible for them from start to finish .
He hopes that other priests around the world will join him in speaking out against any further adoption of artificial intelligence within religious contexts until there is greater clarity on all related ethical considerations first before proceeding any further down this path together collectively across different faiths worldwide .
